Solid supernatural mystery explores family dynamics, loss.

Schmaltzy and heavy-handed the references may be (828 in all the addresses, for instance), but they also set up a really good mystery. Who or what is causing these events to "work together for good?"

If you're looking for a righteous and medium-cheesy drama, dive right in. It's something of a low-calorie Daredevil serial with no real villains to speak of (yet!), plus a sprinkling of Touched by an Angel morality.

It's at least worth watching at least one more. Just in case it does happen to be aliens.

An exemplary pilot in some ways; the premise of an airplane time-jumping five years is engaging, and the central mystery about what has been done to the passengers is a great hook.

Manifest may have a bumpy flight ahead if it hopes to rise above the many failed mystery shows that have disappeared before it.

At this point, Manifest shows promise but hasn't delivered a whole lot to go on for viewers to guess what happens next. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as only one episode has aired and no show is going to deliver all of its answers in its first hour.
September 25, 2018
There's enough intrigue here to keep watching, but Manifest only has a couple of episodes to get the tone right, or else people will check out.

It has a lot to say - and its premise is enough to keep you watching to find out what happens.

A good cast sells the improbable hook by at least making it emotionally probable.

With an ensemble cast and a lot of moving parts, "Manifest" is getting an assist with its liftoff by following NBC's The Voice.
September 24, 2018
Whether it's magic at 35,000 feet or the beginnings of a biblical prophecy about "those who are called," it's worth getting past Manifest's bumpy landing to see if the series truly takes off.
September 24, 2018
There are more sci-fi, supernatural mysteries here, chiefly trying to figure what links everyone on that plane. It's engrossing enough, with emotional stakes powerful enough.
September 24, 2018
Manifest is worth a look, with the proviso that the only way it will last is if enough people see reasons to keep watching.

Manifest is probably one of the best new shows of this season. The show is essentially a remake of The 4400 with a splash of This is Us melodrama. But do I want to go down this Rabbit Hole? Yes, yes I do.

Manifest bounces around like a pinball machine with bumpers marked "sinister," "heartbreak," and "redemption," and scores high whichever one it touches.
September 21, 2018
Self-important much? There's an awful lot of big emotion on this show, which is my polite way of saying that it's pretty soapy... But there's a "Lost"-like mystery afoot that drew me in, as the passengers begin to experience similar after-effects.
September 13, 2018
And yet the ambition on display is admirable. Manifest is brazenly emotional in the This Is Us mold, unafraid to nod at the real toll of missing five years of life... even as it lays the groundwork for a somewhat cracked procedural.
September 12, 2018
Think "Lost," but without an island, a smoke monster or donkey wheel. (At least not yet).
October 10, 2018
The new mystery for NBC might be the most ridiculous, insane, and laughably bad show of the pilot season, but it will certainly intrigue you to no end.
