[The] series succeeds on the sheer charisma and likability of star John Krasinski alongside his solid chemistry with co-star Wendell Pierce.

Nice to see Krasinski back on the small screen.

Jack Ryan has proven to be one of those new, streaming dramas that truly draws you in, making it impossible to take breaks in between each episode.
September 13, 2018
It's a bit of a shame, because whenever the show stops running around half-apologizing for its existence and trying to prove it's cool kid cred with F-bombs, it actually works.

Like the Clancy books dads have been getting en masse for Christmas since the 1980s, the television adaptation ticks quite a lot of undeniably satisfying boxes.

The most moving moments in the three episodes provided for review come from this side of the story, not Ryan's - which is refreshing, but suggests we might also need more from our protagonist.

This eight-parter has a whole new storyline, one not based on one of Clancy's books, and it's a good one... I got hooked right away.
September 7, 2018
Krasinski's Jack Ryan is serviceable, but also shallow and lacking in the flaws and complexities that could make the role sing.
September 7, 2018
And despite its big-budgeted nature thanks to Amazon, the action - though fitting in scope - isn't impressive or memorable enough.
September 7, 2018
It's passive TV, background noise, something to watch while you nap, but it's never more than that. It's an efficiently managed cut-and-paste job with a shiny package, or exactly what we've come to expect from Carlton Cuse.
September 6, 2018
It's never a bore, even when it takes itself more seriously than the material demands.
September 6, 2018
Violent political thriller hits marks but lacks nuance.

Aside from John Krasinski being miscast, and the two hour plot being stretched to eight hours, this is a fun, exciting series.

While it's too early to tell if Krasinski has a shot at becoming the definitive take on Jack Ryan, this is one hell of a starting point for a reboot that nobody expected to be this damn good.
September 4, 2018
There's a haunted sorrow in Krasinski's subdued and appealing performance, which occasionally explodes into undisciplined rage as the body count and stakes rise.
September 4, 2018
It's really rather good, all things considered.

Jack Ryan is most successful when it shifts attention away from its star.

Still, Amazon's Jack Ryan succeeds by spinning a suspenseful, big budget adventure around terrorism around the blandness hero in the business.

If Jack Ryan is the white male superhero we must rely on to save the world, it'd be nice to know him a little better. It'd be nice to spend less time stuck inside his inescapable dread.

Oh, how I wish I could tell you that this show - which has two leads who have been quite beloved on The Office and The Wire respectively - finds a way to rise above the firefights and explosions and terrorism tropes that are part of the genre.
