There are a lot of problems with The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, but perhaps the biggest is its inherent inessentiality. There's literally no reason for this movie to exist.

At times it has the feel of a computer game: cross the bridge, open the gates, jump off the wall, beat the boss. Only characters in computer games tend to be more unpredictable, with more than one twist.

Perversely, a family film this is not: The Mouse King -- actually a writhing body of mice all working together as one moving mass -- is the stuff of children's nightmares.

Behind its sugary bombastic coating, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a hollow and baffling experience; it's like Jupiter Ascending for kids.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is an utterly forgettable visual splendor.

However tasty they look, too much refined sugar and clotted cream can give you indigestion; coming out of this what I wanted was a couple of Rennies. Kids will love it, no surprise considering how many sweet treats they can consume with no ill-effects.

Not sure what we're supposed to expect from a dark, girl-power, Disney-brand sort-of sequel to The Nutcracker, [but] 'Helen Mirren fighting hussar Terminators with a bullwhip' isn't a key third act element that leaps immediately to mind.

At the end of the day, the most frustrating thing about The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is it's not a terrible movie - just a movie that's never interesting, magical, or perilous.

The only thing that younger and older audience members will be able to share here is a sense of boredom.

For all of its sparkly, sweety goodness, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms feels too soulless to really make an impression.

Realms feels like the mouse house just took bits from Alice In Wonderland, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Chronicles of Narnia and recycled them into a straight to DVD release that accidentally made it to theaters.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms looks magical at first sight with lavish costumes and dancing but ends up being rather generic and hardly lives up to its Disney moniker.

If you're not between the ages of two and eight...I'd say you don't have to go watch this.

There are lovely moments peppered through this visually elegant picture, but there is no passion, no danger and no excitement.

This is supposed to be a movie based on "The Nutcracker" and instead you have what feels like an "Alice" clone.

While I appreciate them trying to bring something new to a long-time holiday story, I just feel like they made a turn in the wrong direction and never knew how to get back.

This is not your standard Christmas movie. It has little to do with the family friendly Nutcracker Ballet by Marius Petipa.

It's trying to be a movie but it's also trying to be an adaptation of a stage production... It tried to be all things and it's not really fulfilling any of them.
