As promised at our Annual Gala last Saturday, we have more information about services for our dear Dr. Abdallah Najjar.

Alif Institute deeply mourns the loss of Dr. Abdallah Edward Najjar, a community leader, educator, activist, and founder of Alif Institute. Dr. Najjar passed away on October 4, 2017, at the age of 95, just a few days after the passing of his beloved wife of 69 years, Mrs. Geraldine Blankenship Najjar. May they both rest in peace.

Dr. Najjar decided to retire early from his career at the CDC to dedicate himself to causes dear to his heart. He became active in various non-profit educational, cultural, and charitable organizations. He served on the board of the American Druze Society, the American Druze Foundation, the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the Arab American University Graduates (AAUG), and the Kiwanis Club. Dr. Najjar played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Arab American Women’s Society of Georgia in 1985 and was a strong supporter of the organization.

In 1986, he became a founding member of the Arab-American Fund of Georgia, a nonprofit educational organization. He served as its president from 1990-2003. In 1999, AAFG offered a huge support to the Alif Institute project by raising seed money for its establishment. The two organizations merged in 2002, and through their joined efforts, the Alif Institute opened its doors to the public for the first time in January 2004.

Dr. Najjar served the Alif Institute / AAFG as a board member and later-on as an emeritus board member. He was always proud of the accomplishments of the Alif Institute and of the important role it played in Atlanta. His dedication and support to Alif Institute were exemplary and was honored by Alif Institute in 2008.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2017, at Floral Hills Funeral Home, Tucker, GA.
